Why are you running for Decatur School Board?
- "I love this community"
- born & raised in Decatur
- "School Board is the cornerstone of everything good that happens in this community. We can't succeed without the school succeeding."
What is your top priority if elected?
- Improving the reputation of the school district
- "If we don't improve the reputation, we're not gonna succeed in other areas."
- If the schools don't succeed & we don't get more people coming back to the district & contributing to the tax base as costs increase, that will have a negative effect on businesses, labor, and workforce.
How would you address the student achievement gap?
- We need to address it quickly.
- "It's going to take a lot of different small solutions to fix a lot of different small problems"
- "We need to take a data driven approach"
- determine if certain schools or certain demographics are struggling & "start from the basics and build up"
How would you address school safety and violence?
- "Safety is a huge issue" for students & also staff
- Workplace violence is increasing in other workplaces like healtcare & other industries, not just schools
- Says hiring the safety officer is a good step & we should give him a chance to "get [his] feet wet" and "see how that goes"
What is the district doing well? What prorams would you like to see expanded?
- The Dwayne O. Andreas Ag Academy
- The Jerry J Dawson Civic Leadership Institute
- Says we could expand those and "duplicate in other areas where we need more kids to go into those workforces."
What else do you want voters to know about your candidacy?
- "I love this community"
- "We really need the schools to succeed for everything else in this community to succeed."
- "I am willing to dedicate the time and my resources to that."
